UpToDate Adds Four New Lexi-Comp Reference
Databases; Pediatric Drugs, Natural Products, International Drugs,
and Patient Advisory Leaflet Databases Now Available at the Point
of Care
HUDSON, Ohio & WELLESLEY, Mass.Oct., 2003--UpToDate, a clinical
information resource, announced the addition of four new Lexi-Comp
clinical reference databases--pediatric drugs, natural products,
international drugs and patient advisory leaflets--to version
11.3, which will be available in mid-October. UpToDate fully integrated
the drug databases with the resource's more than 60,000 pages
of original, peer-reviewed text. In addition, UpToDate has added
prescription cost data for adult drugs from www.drugstore.com
to support physicians and institutions in increasing drug cost
awareness.
"Together Lexi-Comp and UpToDate provide physicians with
accurate, up-to-date, concise and clinically relevant drug and
clinical information," said Robert Kerscher, president and
publisher of Lexi-Comp, Inc. "This unique combination of
resources enables clinicians to make informed decisions and reduce
medication errors."
Pediatric Drug Database
The addition of the Pediatric Drug Database is a key milestone
in the development of UpToDate for Pediatrics. While UpToDate
has always contained information on pediatric dosing, the new
database provides more detailed pediatric dosing, including recommendations
for neonatal dosing and for infants less than three months of
age.
Natural Products Database
The Natural Products Database includes more than 170 of the most
commonly used herbs and natural products, and summarizes information
on usage, dosing, interactions, and adverse reactions. In addition,
corresponding UpToDate topic reviews provide evidence-based recommendations
and toxicology guidelines when available. For example, UpToDate
includes two topic reviews that make recommendations on the use
of echinacea for the treatment and prevention of upper respiratory
infections and the common cold based on clinical trials. Given
the number of conflicting studies and scant clinical data, UpToDate
recommends a cautious approach to the use of echinacea.
International Drug Database
In response to the demand of customers in more than 110 countries,
UpToDate added Lexi-Comp's International Drug Database, which
contains some of the drugs that are approved for use outside of
the United States. Recommendations regarding the use of international
drugs and whether or not drugs available in the U.S. are interchangeable
with these drugs, such as Carbimazole in the treatment of hyperthyroidism,
are also included in UpToDate's topic reviews.
Patient Advisory Leaflets
In order to help physicians improve patient education, UpToDate
now contains patient advisory leaflets for drugs in addition to
the articles UpToDate has produced for patients and their family
members who seek current, reliable information on a variety of
medical conditions.
"UpToDate's value lies in the seamless integration of our
evidence-based, peer-reviewed topic reviews with Lexi-Comp's current,
unbiased drug information enabling physicians to deliver the best
care to their patients," said Dr. Burton D. Rose, founder
and editor-in-chief of UpToDate and clinical professor of medicine,
Harvard Medical School.
