What is the Pocket Guide?

This product incorporates the contents of a valuable tool published by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control's National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). The NIOSH Pocket Guide to Chemical Hazards has been a popular reference for practicing health and safety professionals for many years due to the wealth of chemical hazard information available in such a portable, concise document.

Information was taken exclusively from the online version of the NIOSH guide, which is in the public domain and available via the Internet at http://www.cdc.gov/NIOSH/.  Data is based on the 1997 version of the printed guide, and reflects any on-line updates made by NIOSH through December 1999.  The printed guide is available for purchase directly from several vendors, and is usually updated by NIOSH every 4 years.  The reference number for the printed guide is DHHS (NIOSH) Publication No. 97-140.

Detailed information on the guide's origin and contents can be found in NIOSH's INTRODUCTION to the guide.

How do I use it?

This version of the Pocket Guide requires you to install DC & Co.'s document viewer software, iSilo™, version 2.53 or later.  This is necessary in order to adequately view the entire reference and take advantage of the hyperlinks contained in it.  iSilo™ can be purchased through http://www.palmgear.com; as of this writing, the cost is only $12.  More information is available on the developer's web site at http://www.iSilo.com.

Using this guide within iSilo™ is very straightforward, beginning with the opening page that contains links to a chemical names/synonyms index and a Chemical Abstract Number (CAS#) index.  From this point you may jump to any chemical and view the numerous properties, hazards, exposure limits, and other information regarding that chemical.  Links are also included to take you to applicable appendices and basic medical treatment recommendations, and to return you to the starting page ("home").

iSilo™ provides conventional "forward" and "back" buttons to enable navigation to and from other pages, depending on where you were previously.  Scrolling through the document may be accomplished one of three ways: (1) use the up and down hardware buttons on your device, (2) touch the upper half of the viewing screen to move upward (and the lower half to move downward), or (3) enable and use the scrollbar.  You can  jump to any position in the guide using the numerous embedded hyperlinks, and can go directly to major sections (Introduction, Appendices, and Home) by selecting the relevant bookmark (press the "down arrow" located to the left of the browser buttons).

iSilo™ provides a "Find" utility, which is very handy for locating RTECS reference numbers or other information in the document, or for quickly locating a chemical name or CAS number in the index.  You may also "Go" to specific pages (note: "home" is on page 1) or add your own bookmarks to any position in the document to help you get there quickly when needed.

Please see the iSilo™ documentation for more specifics on using the document viewer features.
